The teaching methods teachers used failed to engage students. Also, some experts believe that the difficulties students face with conditionals arise from the interaction between meaning and form. So, understanding this relationship and how it frequently appears in conditional sentences is crucial. To address this issue, a study was conducted to assess the proficiency of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Waringinkurung in constructing conditional sentences. The research involved 32 students, and the methodology used was qualitative content analysis, which included tests and interviews. The students' sentences were coded and sorted using a method called summative content analysis. This method involves identifying and measuring specific words or material in the text to understand how they are used. The researcher used various categories like formula of conditional sentences, main and if clauses, modal verbs, verb tense, and word order for further analysis. This analysis helped the researcher evaluate the students' understanding and proficiency in constructing conditional sentences. The study found that students commonly made mistakes in verb tenses and the use of modal verbs. Interviews with the students also confirmed that verb tenses were the most challenging aspect for them. Overall, the research results showd that the students had a good ability to construct conditional sentences, with an average score of 71.75. The findings pinpointed specific areas where students encountered challenges, providing valuable insights for educators to effectively address these issues and enhance overall proficiency.
Khusnul Khotimah Faisal Ila Amalia Afif Suaidi Copyright (c) 2023 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2023-11-17 2023-11-17 7 2 164 181 10.20473/etno.v7i2.48733 The Power of Verbal Expression Examining Language Function in the Short Film ‘The Darkest Blue’ https://e-journal.unair.ac.id/ETNO/article/view/46954
This research aims to examine and describe the language functions employed in the dialogues by the cast of the short film "The Darkest Blue" (2021). The qualitative descriptive method is utilized to analyze the data extracted from the dialogues in the film. The language function theory proposed by Holmes (2011) and Halliday (1992) is employed to analyze and categorize the language functions found in the dialogues of the cast. The identified language functions in this study include emotive, phatic, directive, and instrumental. Notably, the emotive function emerges as the most frequently used in "The Darkest Blue," as it serves to convey the characters' emotions and thoughts. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of language functions employed in various film genres, particularly in the context of short films. It sheds light on how language functions enrich the portrayal of characters and enhance storytelling in films.

Laela Kamalina Fasikhatul Ilmiyah Sandina Tasya Aulia Copyright (c) 2023 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2023-11-17 2023-11-17 7 2 182 215 10.20473/etno.v7i2.46954
