Types of Creative Commons Licenses

Creative Commons offers six main types of licenses, designed to provide various levels of freedom and protection:

  • CC BY (Attribution): The most open license. It allows others to distribute, edit, modify, and build upon the work, for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, as long as they credit the original creator.
  • CC BY-SA (ShareAlike): Similar to CC BY, but any derivative works must be licensed under the same terms as the original work.
  • CC BY-ND (NoDerivatives): Allows others to download the works and share them with others as long as they credit the creator, but they can't change the work in any way or use it commercially.
  • CC BY-NC (NonCommercial): Lets others edit, modify, and build upon the work non-commercially, and while new works might be commercial, the original work cannot be used commercially.
  • CC BY-NC-SA (NonCommercial-ShareAlike): A mix of non-commercial and sharing alike, allowing modifications as long as the new use is non-commercial and licensed under the same terms.
  • CC BY-NC-ND (NonCommercial-NoDerivatives): The most restrictive, allowing others to download the works and share them with others as long as they credit the creator, but they can't
