Muhammad PradanaPurnawan Basundoro

The concept of the “modern mother” entered the Dutch East Indies as European women came to the colony with European lifestyles and models of baby care. European-style modernity was felt to need to be applied in the Dutch East Indies, including in baby care procedures, to assert white supremacy and prevent degenerative effects believed to arise due to intense interaction with tropical climates and indigenous groups. By using historical research methods consisting of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, this study seeks to explain the role of newspaper advertisements in shaping the image of modern mothers in the Dutch East Indies. As a result, the baby care product advertisements potrayed the fugure of modern mother through images and words. A modern and scientific mother is portrayed as one who complies with doctors’ recommendations, maintains physical distance from her child, understands the latest scientific developments related to hygiene and health, and facilitates her child with high-quality goods.
Farikha ShabriliaSafirulhaq Ma’muli
