Abstract: This research aims to pragmatically analyze the comparison of judges' comments on Indonesian Idol Season 12 and American Idol Season 6, with a focus on the politeness strategies and expressive speech acts of praise used. These two seasons were chosen because they have the highest rating shares in Indonesia and the United States respectively. The research method used involves collecting data through observing videos from YouTube. The videos were transcribed for analysis using the expressive speech act theory of praise. In the analysis, researchers identified the form, frequency, and differences in the use of expressive speech acts of praise that reflect their respective cultural backgrounds. The results showed that there was a striking difference in the frequency of expressive speech acts of praise between the two events. On Indonesian Idol, 15 expressive speech acts of praise were found in the judges' comments, while on American Idol, only 9 similar speech acts were found. This difference indicates that the culture of the target audience of the program can influence the dominance and speech act patterns that emerge. In other words, expressions of politeness and praise in the judges' comments are more common in Indonesian Idol, which may reflect Indonesian cultural norms which tend to be more collective and oriented towards social harmony compared to American culture which is more individualistic. This research provides insight into the relationship between communication strategies in television programs and the cultural context of society, as well as the importance of understanding cross-cultural pragmatics.
