Virtual Posyandu Program during the Pandemic Maintained Children's Growth and Development

Balitagrow application Stunting Malnutrition Agricultural area

Authors

Background: According to the authors' previous study, mothers' knowledge of eating behavior was crucial in preventing malnutrition in children. The delay of the Posyandu program due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a decrease in monitoring children's growth, which can lead to children's growth and development going undetected.

Objectives: This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of virtual Posyandu program for strengthening cadre health promotion services for nutritionally vulnerable children in the agricultural area of Jember Regency during the offline Posyandu absent in the Pandemic era.

Methods: The intervention was carried out for 21 days on 169 respondents from two districts (representing two different socio-culture) by involving cadre as partners who started to use the application to promote nutritional health for children and teach its use to parents. Growth variables were assessed by measuring nutritional status according to Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia Regulation, before and after the intervention, while development variables were assessed using a Developmental Pre-Screening questionnaire (DPSQ).

Results: There are significant differences in the comparison of pre and post-program in children's growth and development parameters in the virtual Posyandu program in both districts. This means that the program has been effective in ensuring that children's growth and development are maintained, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Conclusions: The Android-based application in the virtual Posyandu program which has effectively maintained the children's growth and development in the pandemic era is worth continuing to be developed according to user needs.
